    English Description

    The ducal castle

The castle of Crecchio has a square structure with four corner towers.
The exact date of construction of this castle is not known, but it has certainly undergone numerous alterations over the centuries.
The oldest part is made up of the north-east tower, larger than the others which represents a typical 12th century Norman tower.
In 1279, Crecchio and its castle were under the jurisdiction of Guglielmo Morello, who lived there and was lord of Arielli.
In the years between 1300-1400 it suffered numerous looting and devastation.
Besides the Norman tower, the other parts of the castle were built starting in the 15th century.
In 1789 the De Riseis transformed the castle from a defensive structure into a residence by covering the crenellated walkway on the second floor with a roof.
The southwest tower, in Gothic style, was restored in 1904 after the 1881 earthquake.
On 9 September 1943, King Vittorio Emanuele II, the Queen and Prince Umberto stopped in this castle while fleeing Rome.
In the period from December 1943 to June 1944, the castle was heavily bombed.
Only in the seventies, by the superintendence of L'Aquila, the castle was restored in its current form and today houses the Byzantine and Early Medieval Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo.

    The Byzantine Museum
From the discovery of the archaeological site to its exhaustive excavation, from the restoration of the pieces to their display in an exhibition of exceptional success, up to the crowning of a ten-year dream: the birth of the Byzantine and Early Medieval Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo. This is, in a nutshell, the exciting adventure lived in the small Abruzzo village of Crecchio, thanks to the precious and effective collaboration between institutions and volunteers, by a group of enthusiasts and archaeologists united by the same goal: to protect and enhance a crumb of the immense archaeological heritage of our country.

The Byzantine and Early Medieval Museum of Abruzzo is housed in the Ducal Castle of Crecchio (Chieti), and exhibits objects found during the research camps that the Archeoclub d'Italia headquarters of Crecchio conducted, from 1988 to 1991, in close collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendency of Abruzzo, on the site of a Roman-Byzantine villa discovered in the locality of Vassarella di Crecchio. There are also other Ostrogothic and Lombard finds from the Abruzzo region, which together manage to reconstruct the life of the Byzantines in Abruzzo, the war against the Goths, the events that concerned the coastal area between the end of the sixth and the beginning of the seventh century. The Alberto Carlo Fraracci room houses an Etruscan collection, donated to the Archeoclub d'Italia in Crecchio in 1995

    Descrizione
