"The country of brooms" as Gabriele d'Annunzio called it, is a charming city on the Frentana Riviera, today an important tourist center in that part of the Abruzzo coast called the Mediterranean.
Its territory is characterized by the presence of vineyards and olive groves and the precious production of oil has given the city the title of City of Oil. Known for its spectacular lookouts, on a monumental coast, characterized by the presence of suggestive cliffs, San Vito is renowned for being a witness of the great passion that D'Annunzio lived in these places with Elvira Leoni.
Overlooking the overhanging promontory of the brooms, one can discover the "overflow" described by Vate "stretched out on the rocks, like a lurking monster, with its one hundred limbs". Just before the detour to the "Belvedere", right on the state road 16, is the Dannunziano Hermitage: the farmhouse where the poet took refuge with his mistress and where he conceived the tragedy "The triumph of death"
Ancient fortified village, Sanctum Vitum, has long remained linked to the fate of the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere. Due to its destruction by the Count of Manoppello, the Benedictine monks donated the village to the city of Lanciano which, aware of the gift that had been given to it, improved the seaport and made San Vito the strength of its commercial traffic. With the phase of decline of commercial exchanges, the port of San Vito was no longer used and was sold as a fiefdom. During the period of the Risorgimento, the town stood out for its struggle against the hegemony of the Bourbons.

"Il Paese delle ginestre" come lo chiamava Gabriele d'Annunzio, è un'affascinante città sulla Riviera di Frentana, oggi importante centro turistico in quella parte della costa abruzzese chiamata Mediterraneo.
Il suo territorio è caratterizzato dalla presenza di vigneti e uliveti e la preziosa produzione di olio ha dato alla città il titolo di Città dell'Olio. Noto per le sue spettacolari vedette, su una costa monumentale, caratterizzata dalla presenza di strapiombi suggestivi, San Vito è rinomato per essere testimone della grande passione che D'Annunzio ha vissuto in questi luoghi con Elvira Leoni.
Affacciato sul promontorio strapiombante delle ginestre, si può scoprire il "trabocco" descritto da Vate "disteso sulle rocce, simile a un mostro in agguato, con le sue cento membra". Poco prima della deviazione per il "Belvedere", proprio sulla statale 16, si trova l'Eremo Dannunziano: la cascina dove il Vate si rifugiò con la sua amante e dove concepì la tragedia "Il trionfo della morte"
Antico borgo fortificato, Sanctum Vitum, è rimasto a lungo legato al destino dell'Abbazia di San Giovanni in Venere. A causa della sua distruzione da parte del Conte di Manoppello, i monaci benedettini donarono il villaggio alla città di Lanciano che, consapevole del dono che gli era stato dato, migliorò il porto marittimo e fece di San Vito la forza del suo traffico commerciale. Con la fase di declino degli scambi commerciali, il porto di San Vito non fu più utilizzato e fu venduto come feudo. Nel periodo del Risorgimento, il paese si è distinto per la sua lotta contro l'egemonia dei Borboni.
