The Aurum is located in the heart of Pescara's Pineta Dannunziana and was conceived in 1910 as an elegant circular building - the so-called Kursaal - in a context that envisaged, in architect Liberi's intentions, the construction of bathing establishments.
However, the project remained unfinished and, in the 1920s, the Pomilio brothers transformed the structure into the Aurum distillery, a name coined by Gabriele D'Annunzio to indicate the orange-based liqueur (from the Latin aurantium) that was produced there.
In the 1970s, the factory was closed and for decades the structure remained abandoned, even running the risk of being demolished. In 2003, the Municipality of Pescara decided to purchase and renovate the building, with the intention of turning it into a multifunctional cultural container, capable of hosting exhibitions, events, seminars, conferences, etc.
The renovation, which began in 2005, covered a total area of 10,000 square metres, and was carried out taking into account both the 'memory' of the old rooms and the need to recover new spaces for technological equipment and modern functional requirements (teaching and research areas, support rooms for exhibitions, municipal offices, shopping centre).
In July 2007, the Aurum, authentic gold of Pescara, finally returned to shine as a new factory of art and culture and today is a place that welcomes the most lively and original ferments of research and artistic expression.

L’ Aurum si trova nel cuore della Pineta Dannunziana di Pescara e fu concepito nel 1910 come elegante fabbricato a forma circolare – il cosiddetto Kursaal – in un contesto che prevedeva, nelle intenzioni dell’architetto Liberi, la realizzazione di stabilimenti balneari.
Il progetto tuttavia restò incompiuto e, negli anni ’20, i fratelli Pomilio trasformarono la struttura nella distilleria Aurum, nome coniato da Gabriele D’Annunzio per indicare il liquore a base di arancia (dal latino aurantium) che vi veniva prodotto
Negli anni ’70 la fabbrica venne chiusa e per decenni la struttura rimase abbandonata correndo addirittura il rischio di essere perfino demolita. Nel 2003 il Comune di Pescara decise di acquistare e recuperare l’edificio, con l’intenzione di farne un contenitore culturale multifunzionale, atto ad ospitare mostre, eventi, seminari, convegni, ecc.
La ristrutturazione, iniziata nel 2005, ha interessato una superficie complessiva di 10.000 mq, ed è stata attuata tenendo conto sia della ‘memoria’ degli antichi ambienti sia della necessità di recuperare nuovi spazi per le attrezzature tecnologiche e le moderne esigenze funzionali (aree di didattica e ricerca, locali di supporto per le esposizioni, uffici comunali, shopping centre).
Nel luglio del 2007 l’Aurum, autentico oro di Pescara è tornato finalmente a splendere come nuovo opificio d’arte e cultura ed oggi è un luogo che accoglie i fermenti più vivi ed originali della ricerca e dell’espressione artistica.
