The birthplace of Gabriele d'Annunzio stands on the main street of the ancient city of Pescara, which was enclosed in a military fortress demolished during the poet's childhood. It was declared a National Monument in 1927 with a decree from Mussolini, solicited by d'Annunzio himself who thus wanted to ensure it was protected by the State. In 1958 the building passed to the State property and subsequently placed under the protection of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. The building has undergone several restoration and consolidation interventions which have not altered the original typology of a nineteenth-century bourgeois house too much. On the ground floor there is a small and cozy courtyard, characterized by a brick well. Gabriele d'Annunzio was born in this house on 12 March 1863. He spent his childhood there until the age of eleven when, to continue his studies, he moved to Prato. There will then be brief returns to Abruzzo to greet the mother left alone in this house. On the first floor of the building, the tour winds its way through the first five rooms, immersing the visitor in the atmosphere of the nineteenth-century house with the furnishings, furnishings and paintings of the time: a treasure trove of memories and experiences of the childhood of the Poet. The poet himself is our guide, through the excerpts from the Notturno, shown on the panels placed in the rooms, which convey the emotion, the affection for this house and the nostalgia for the happy childhood years spent with the family still united and with many friends and playmates. The reception rooms were embellished with tempera decorations in the vaults, created by artists from the Marches in the mid-nineteenth century and are the oldest evidence of pictorial decoration existing in the city which has been preserved in its entirety. They repropose neoclassical themes with plant motifs in candelabra, figures of cupids and fantastic animals. In the second section of the Museum we find the Poet's wardrobe, a cross-section of the fashion of the time of which he was an original and innovative interpreter. You can admire the red coat worn for hunting trips or horse races, the original golden sandals that completed the summer outfits. In the following rooms are the precious first editions of his works, illustrated with woodcuts. This is followed by the disturbing scenographic setup with the casts of the poet's face and hand, made on his body just after his death, on the night of March 1, 1938, by his sculptor friend Arrigo Minerbi. Finally, in the soldier poet's room there are war memorabilia, period photos, illustrative panels of the war companies and the general's uniforms. On the ground floor you can visit the stable, in memory of the extraordinary love that Gabriele d'Annunzio nurtured for his first horses, Aquilino and Murgione known as Silvano.

La casa natale di Gabriele d’Annunzio sorge sul corso principale dell’antica città di Pescara, che era racchiusa in una fortezza militare demolita negli anni dell'infanzia del poeta. Fu dichiarata Monumento Nazionale nel 1927 con decreto di Mussolini, sollecitato dallo stesso d’Annunzio che voleva così assicurarla alla tutela dello Stato. Nel 1958 l’edificio è passato al Demanio dello Stato e successivamente posto sotto la tutela del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali. L'edificio ha subito diversi interventi di restauro e consolidamento che non hanno troppo alterato l’originaria tipologia di casa borghese ottocentesca. Al piano terra si apre un piccolo e raccolto cortile, caratterizzato da un pozzetto in laterizio.Gabriele d’Annunzio nasce in questa casa il 12 marzo 1863. Vi trascorre l’infanzia fino all'età di undici anni quando, per proseguire gli studi, si trasferisce a Prato. Ci saranno successivamente brevi ritorni in Abruzzo per salutare la mamma rimasta sola in questa casa. Al primo piano dell’edificio, il percorso di visita si snoda attraverso le prime cinque stanze facendo immergere il visitatore nell’atmosfera della casa ottocentesca con gli arredi, le suppellettili, i dipinti dell’epoca: uno scrigno di ricordi e di vissuto dell’infanzia del Poeta.A farci da guida è proprio il Vate, attraverso i brani tratti dal Notturno, riportati sui pannelli posti nelle stanze, che ci trasmettono l’emozione, l’affetto per questa casa e la nostalgia per gli anni dell’infanzia felice trascorsa con la famiglia ancora tutta unita e con i tanti amici e compagni di giochi. Le stanze di rappresentanza furono impreziosite da decorazioni a tempera nelle volte, realizzate da artisti marchigiani a metà dell’Ottocento e sono la testimonianza più antica di decorazione pittorica esistente in città conservatasi nella sua integrità. Ripropongono temi neoclassici con motivi vegetali a candelabre, figure di amorini e animali fantastici.Nella seconda sezione del Museo troviamo il guardaroba del Poeta, uno spaccato della moda del tempo della quale fu originale e innovativo interprete. Si ammirano il cappotto rosso indossato per le battute da caccia o nelle gare ippiche, gli originali sandali dorati che completavano le mise estive. Nelle stanze successive sono le preziose prime edizioni delle sue opere, illustrate con xilografie. Segue lo scenografico inquietante allestimento con i calchi del viso e della mano del poeta, realizzati sulla sua salma appena dopo la morte, la notte del 1° marzo 1938, dall’amico scultore Arrigo Minerbi. Infine, nella stanza del Poeta soldato sono presenti cimeli di guerra, foto d’epoca, pannelli illustrativi delle imprese belliche e le divise da generale.Al piano terra si può visitare la stalla, in memoria dell’amore straordinario che Gabriele d’Annunzio nutriva per i suoi primi cavalli, Aquilino e Murgione detto Silvano.
